About where in evolutionary history did trichromatic vision arise?

It is my understanding that trichromatic vision is the result of duplication and modification of a gene responsible for vision in a single color. Is it possible that in the future, there will be yet another duplication and series of mutations that will lead to perception of even broader ranges of light and EM energy?
