How accurate is the KE= ( mv^2)/2 relation ?

You this man uses the the wheel to push him self forward. Now unlike pushing the wheel uses friction to move forward. Hence there is a loss of energy due to friction (in the form of heat). Hence KE doesn't constitute the total energy consumed.
